Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am looking for reassurance. After adding new standard rings to the pistons of my MM RTU, and properly staggering them (according to manual), I used a ring compressor and installed them into the cylinders (which were honed prior to this assembly). I had to lightly tap them (block of wood and hammer) to get them all the way in. (I thought they would go in easier since the bore, cylinder and compressor were all oiled up). I then added the gasket and dropped each cylinder block into the case. I next added the rocker arms (with each valve tappet backed off all the way), and then slightly tightened the block bolts. For each connecting rod journal, I added new standard bearing shells. I greased them up and torgued the bolts to about 50 lbs, added the metcal clips and cotter pin. (please keep in mind that I never removed the crankshaft and each rod was reassembled to the proper locating)). WHere I need reassuarance is the following:. 1st:, would I know (with any one of the five senses), if a piston ring was not seated properly within the cylinder ....would I hear a terrible grind, etc when I hand cranked it over..... .????? THe pistons had soaked in kerosene for over a week, and I made sure the ring grooves were both cleaned out and within tolerance according to the manual specs. I do not hear anything when I hand crank it (no grinding, etc.....Is quiet good!!!!!) I also poured a little oil in the top of each cylinder just to make sure I was not scoring the interior of the cylinder if I did indeed do it wrong. My second question is: What exactly should it feel like when hand cranking it....assuming I attached the connecting rod and new bearings correctly, should it smoothly crank over. I do feel a "slight" (I mean very slight) resistance when cranking it by hand. Is this normal? If it was binding or improperly assembled, WOULD I DEFINATELY KNOW IT? WHen I hand crank it, it feels the same as it did when I first got it.....Also, with the pistons in, should it be very difficult to crank it by hand using just the pully (without the crank arm). I do not have the cyinder head, crank case cover, etc on yet. The valves are still backed off all the way and there is no oil (except for what I lubed up) at this point.
