I've assumed, since the day I bought it, that this tractor has a 6V positive ground system. It has a delco generator on it (I haven't found the number yet) and the battery is a long skinny one mounted over the right rear axle. Recently, I've begun to think that it may be 12V. Were these tractors 6V from the factory? I know there are a lot of 12v conversions out there, but everything here "looks" standard.

The reason I am starting to have doubts is that I can't seem to charge it at all with the 6V setting on my charger. This means one of three things...the battery is NOT 6V...the charger is screwed up on the 6V side...or the battery is shot. The only way I can start it is to charge for a few minutes on 12 V...then start it with the charger hooked up.

Any ideas?

Thanks guys...I should have known better. I stopped at TSC about an hour ago and...there it was...something I knew a million years ago and forgot. 1 cell = 2 volts. 6V has 3, 8V has 4, 12V has 6. I will now change my name to stupidTim. :=)

A Jetstar 3 is 12v from the factory. I think with a generator it should be positive ground. (The cable from the Positive post on the battery connects to the frame.) Give her about 3-4 hours on 12v charge and try to crank it.

If by chance the negative post on the battery is grounded, It has probably been changed and I would not reccommend changing it back.

Look at the battery. If it has 6 filler caps for water then it is a 12 volt. If it has 3 filler caps for water then it is a 6 volt. I believe they were 12 volt on the jet star3 no 6 volt.
