I was testing out a old round baler I got yesterday on the 4 star and I was having trouble with the PTO. I had to push the lever forward and hold it pretty hard to get any power out of it. If I let go the PTO would wind down and stop. I'm a good mechanic and don't mind tearing into it if you all think it is something that is just an adjustment or something that wouldn't require any parts. Parts for this old tractor are near impossible to find around here. Right now it is my main big tractor and I can't really afford to have it down for long. Not untill I am done restoring my super M anyway. Anyone have an idea where the problem with the PTO lever could be???
Thanks. Dan

It would be worth your while to repair the PTO clutch or adjust it. I've done it and would sya that it would be best to do it when you have plenty of time (off season). Parts are really pretty easy. I'd start with a parts book, then call Welters 417-498-6496 or Clint Stamm 785-325-2720. Both are great part sources. I've been impressed with the number of parts available new and what can be had used for reasonable prices. Back to the 4 Star, if you don't fix the problem, you'll likely damage more things trying to make it work. Good Luck!

Dan,
The PTO lever should require a good bit of force to snap it over center. From your statements I would assume that it either isn't snapping over center or it is going over center too easy and in either case slipping. It is adjusted by turning a threaded ring with notches in the outer edge held by a spring loaded pin. It is easy to adjust but you have to drain the hydraulic system and remove it along with the seat. Then remove the plate under the system.

Operating it with it slipping will warp the plates requiring them to be replaced!

John

It goes over center easy enough, just won"t stay far enough forward to fully engage. I"ve been using it a lot for my sprayer lately but that pump is nothing compared to a big round baler. Still I might have warped the plates already. This poor old tractor has so many little problems I hope it"s nothing major. The governor is shot on it and the hydraulics leak down pretty fast. It"s got at least one wrist pin slightly knocking too and I don"t have any idea where to get parts from. I ended up having to make one new push rod for it because one was bent so badly when I got it.

I plan to fix it. I have way too much work going on in the shop right now to bring it in but I have to asap. I plan to call that place today. Thanks everyone.

I have run this tractor in the paper probably half a dozen times trying to sell it and not ever one call. I gave up. I wasn't asking much either.
