UTS rear wheel play

The club I belong to has a MM UTS (standard) and there is alot of play in the rear wheels, so much that they don't want to take it to the fields, just use it for belt work. No one has taken wheels off to see if shaft (axle) is worn or wheel colar is worn or if both are worn. Is shaft tapered or cone shaped? Tightning of the big nut does nothing.In fact there are some large washers or spacers there, (it was that way when we got it.) Any suggestions for repair are appreciated. THANKS

our '54 UTSD had been run looseand worn the splines pretty bad so i got some key stock and put in the gap to fill it in then made a shim to fix it.

Hi, I have been working on my UTS. MY rear axle oil seal was leaking oil real bad and I could not get my hub off the axle. I finally removed the axle with the hub on it. I found a UTS parts tractor and removed the hub and then the axle from that one and installed it in my good tractor. It wasn't that hard to do. That is what you might have to do. That axle is tapered? I didn't notice if it was. There should be a large spacer on the inside that will fit tight against the bearing when you tighten the nut. Chances are your hub is worn the most.

What I meant to say is that the splines taper. Not the O.D. of the axle.

The shaft is tapered, but if its been run loose long that probably won't be any help. the late model Us had bolts to pinch the splined hub on the shaft. Probably the hub is worn most as it was not as hard as the shaft.

One of my '49 UTS is loose like that too.

I don't know what the fix is. I do have another tractor that has had some 'setscrew' bolts added over a key in one of its axles. But I don't know if it would work on splines or not.
