We have a 47 ZTU it starts and runs fine (it's nicely restored) but since we got it as junk and rebuilt it it starts hard, the tractor starts fine its the starter, it cranks real slow one tinme then stops then you have to try it again once in a while it turns over more than once, we tried new 6v battery battery cables etc, i got to thinking could it be a 12 v starter any hael out there, it it spins over slow also like uh- uh---uh.

If I had to guess I would say your cables are too small, too old, or you have a bad connection. As a test you might connect a good pair of Jumper cables (#2 or #1 wire size) from a good six volt battery directly to the starter. If It spins fast, then your problem is in your wiring or cables somewhere. Remove every cable and wire to the starter one at a time and clean the connection good with a wire brush. Also remove the positive ground from the tractor and clean it. Make sure there is a good ground. you may have to file the paint away from the ground. Clean both battery posts. A six volt will start almost as fast as a 12 volt if everything is good. Also, and this is very important....the battery cables for a six volt have to be much larger than the 12 volt. They need to be triple Zero size (OOO) to carry the amps from a six volt. Remember a six volt has more cranking amps than a 12 volt. Do these things, and if you have a good battery you will be fine.

It sounds pretty typical for a ZTU with 6 volt. Mine does the same, so I usually use the hand crank as it starts real easy.
