I bought an R that has a pump on left side that the owner said uses crankcase oil to run cylinders. I got the tractor running but dont have any oil pressure. It has a guage on the pump and new guage in dash. I took line off guage and it pumps out oil but no pressure reading at guage what have i got here. I tried a new guage but same results. Do i have to have that pump in certain possition.

1. you can remove the tube and plug the hole in the side cover where the tube runs to the pump in in the side cover and see if that helps. The lower tube, it is pressure and the upper is a return.

2. Try turning the pressure relief valve screw in on the engine oil pump. Its under the front of the engine, and the relief valve screw is on the other side of the engine from the front cover.

3. If that doesn't work, remove the big nut the little screw is in, the spring and the plunger and make sure the plunger is not stuck and is free to move in the bore. And the bore is clean and not full of goo.

4. The pickup screen could also be full of goo.

5. The next thing I think of is to check inside for bearing clearance. Too much clearance bleeds off oil pressure. Also, when you remove the cover make sure the cover gasket is in good condition around where the cover has the fitting for the side cover oil pump.

6. I guess the 1/2 moon keys in the oil pump gear in the pump or a pin in the drive gear off the camshaft could have sheared on the oil pump shaft, I doubt it since you say it pumps but has no pressure. It is a thing to check.

7. The pressure is supposed to be around 30 psi and it doesn't make much difference what guage you use as long as it reads to 30 psi and is in good working condition.

This is probably not everything to check, its just all I can think of.

Let me guess here, your useing a oil preassure gauge made for a car or truck, right?? If so then it may not owrk because these old engines and low preassure engines and if the gauge starts reading at say 20 PSI its will not see the preassure that is there. You need and old type gauge to see for sure. Now as far as the hyd system I think but not sure you need something like 10W nondetergent oil in that system but the newer universal hyd oil works, or at least it did in the R I had years ago and I tapped in to the hyd system to run a loader. Still wish I hadn't sold that tractor but that was before I started doing what I do now
