waterpump shaft slop??

On my u moline there was a knock comin off the lower waterpump outlet.I pulled off the pump cover and found some endplay slop.How much is reasonable?It only does this on idle,why?There is enough endplay that if you pull the dist cap and hold the rotor then push on the waterpump impeller itll move the rotor aprox 1/8.Same ammount as the endplay..I think its throwing off my timing...How do you correct this??Also there is a set screw between the weep hole and the grease fitting for the waterpump...Is that used to pin down somthin internally to hold that shaft ??Hope you can help....steve

IT is a gasoline or lp, right? Diesels have different pumps.

Is the water pump seal holding the water in?
The reason I ask is that I am thinking that shaft has a shoulder that runs against a block that has an oil seal for the shaft and a bushing (Where that grease fitting you ask about is greased)

The front side of that block has a surface that the water pump seal rides on and there is a spring between the seal and the impeller that holds the seal against that same block.

So between the shoulder on the shaft at the rear and the spring and seal on the front side there should be no end play on the shaft.

Did you check that setscrew in the front cover just inboard of the water pump and make sure it gives the camshaft only about 1/4 turn of end play?

Meaning you turn it in until you feel resistance then back it out 1/4 turn and lock it there with the big nut. This keeps the camshaft from walking back and forth in the block as it turns. And from experience, too much end play can result in an awful knock in about that same area.
