I am restoring a 1948 UTS on LP. Carb is worn out. Does anyone know of a source for carb kits or new carbs for this tractor? If so, what would be a realistic price for a new carb?

Carbs should be relatively easy to come by - its the regulators that are the big problem. What is worn out? Motec may be able to rebuild the carb. Have you tried Welters (417) 498-6496. If they don't have one they may be able to point you to a source and guess at price.

Regulator & vaporizer are OK. Found a new in box MM carb for $100. Thought it would be cheaper and easier than rebuilding. What do you think? Mechanic told me that all the moving parts are worn out. Not surprised - everything else has been. Had to choke 1/2 because of so much vacuum leak in carb.

LP carbs should be somewhat forgiving of vacuum leaks,(in the carb it self). If it is the old ensign with the long throat, check the small vacuum lines that go from the intake to the vaporizer. If there is a leak in one of the lines, it may not open the vaporizer all the way to send vapor to the carb. By choking it you are creating more vacum wich may over come a leak in one of the lines. I don't know if $100 is a good price for NOS carb. I've bought used ones for about $25 and had good luck.

For a carb, contact Motec Engineering in Indiana. There are kits available for the Ensign regulators, they are not cheap and do not contain anything but the gaskets and diaphrams. They come form Oklahoma. If you need more info on these sources, email grandfieldfarm at peoplepc.com. John

Do you need a kit for the carb or the vaporizer. It seems the problems are usually with the vaporizers. If it is ensign I think the kits are no longer available. If it's Impco or Century you should be able to get them on ebay or have your local propane dealer order one for you.

It's actually the carb, not the vaporizer. Vaporizer has already been rebuilt. I have a source for a new carb - wondering what I should be willing to pay for it???
