I posted on here a couple weeks ago and appreciate the reply from flamefighter. But things change (like my wallet!) and I dont think that Im goin to put all the cubes in for this season. My question is I have a 504 lp with 4206 heads and an ensign carb, converter set up. Is it worth messin with or is their something different that I can do like a different carb, intake combination to wake it up? Im planning on pulling this season with the engine at stock cubes to just have fun and maybe doin the good stuff next winter. It seems to be a sound engine with good oil pressure and no blowby but it will run good for a while and then quit and will not start back for a while. I checked fire and it fires good at the coil, into the distibutor, but not at the plugs. The rotor and cap are new along with points and condensor, wires and plugs. What gives? Would like to know what the points gap at and the valve lash settings are. Thanks abunch

Your problem with it quiting after a short time may well be the condenser. I have had several "new" ones do similar things in the last few years. Try putting the old one back in to see if that is the problem.

Also, on the valve lash questions - the MM mechanic told me to just run the adjustment screw down until it just seated against the valve stem.

Then back it off 1/4 turn and tighten down the locking nut.

This was done after the engine had run a little while and was good and warm.

That might not be too scientific, but he overhauled A LOT of MM's and worked on a lot more for many years here.

Not sure on the "power" questions for pulling - but out here in West Texas, some folks turbocharge the HD800"s for extra power.

You"ve sure got to be careful, though, since you can melt pistons or other bad things in a hurry. The local MM mechanic (who had years of experience with them) told me one time it took him several attempts to hit the right balance of boost versus holding together.

How long does your engine run?? The coil isn"t getting hot and failing, is it?? I"ve had engines do that before.

Also - I always ran 4 prong Champion spark plugs in my MM's - if memory serves, they were D-14N's.

Jim said they were easier on mags.

third party image

Pic of one of the big horses pumping water - this engine pumped about 900 gallons per minute from 400 feet down.
