I have a M-5 LP that will not start. It will fire with starter fluid but not vapor. the tank was just filled- shows 45 lb.The tractor has been sitting up for several years. Thanks for any ideas...

Just my 2cents. I run many MM lp tractors from 445 to Vista lp and 99% of the time I never turn on the liquid valve and they run just fine.

You can do it that way if you want to freeze up the regulator-vaporizer and foul out the plugs. Every MM operators manual I've seen recommended to start on vapor at all temperatures to lessen the chance of a freeze up and for a better start. Spark plugs should be gapped lower also for a LP at .015" to .018" and a colder heat range spark plug can be run for vaporous fuels like LP gases and natural gas.

Prior comments are pretty much correct, although this time of the year it should start on with the liquid valve open and the vapor valve closed. One thing I would check though, is the spark plugs. If they are champion plugs, change them, propane and champion do not mix. Has something to do with the copper base that creates a problem. Champion guys will argue forever on this, but 30 years experience will disagree on this forever.

Also check carb throttle and govnernor linkage operation to be sure throttle actually stays open and doesn't pull shut during starting. On LP engines use the choke full on or off pushed all the way in when warm starting.

The tank guage is telling you the tank is 45% full of liquid LP. You never want to fill it more than 80% and sometimes less than that during hot weather. You should only start it on Vapor and turn on the Vapor valve slowly NOT fast. Turning the valve on fast will cause the excess flow disc safety valve to slam shut on the valve inside tank not allowing fuel flow. If it was turned on fast you have to close slowly and then let tank pressure equalize before opening slowly again. You don't run on liquid until the engine running has warmed to operating temperature and again slowly open the liquid valve. Always open and close the valves slowly to keep the safety valve disc inside from shutting off flow. Like Curt said you may need to run some checks for flow out of the regulator/vaporizer to the carb by taking some lines loose and carefully in a open area with no sparks, pagers or phones test for fuel flow. After lines have been disconnected for fuel flow testing or replacement always check connections with a water/soap solution and brush for leaks. A operators manual and I&T manual will help and your local LP dealer should also be able to help with parts and LP system diagnosis and repairs. Check ignition system for a good spark also and if been trying to start it on liquid the plugs are probably fouled and need changing. Make sure it has good air flow to carb and no plugging of air cleaner or pipes. You have to have oil in the oil bath air cleaner and at correct level and connected to carb also for a LP engine to start well. You always want to shut off a LP by shutting off the liquid and running on vapor a while to let engine cool and running on vapor again before shutting down reduces pressure in tank for easier filling later also. Shut off after cooling by shutting vapor valve to run out of fuel and turn off ignition then. When it is run out of fuel that way it lessens the chance of fuel system high pressure damage from LP fuel expanding in system during temperature changes.

Are you saying it won't start OR run or will it run but not start? In any event, the problem is likely with the vaporizer. If you can put your hands to an IT manual and a couple of simple gauges, you can find the problem. It's a very simple system but must be in balance if the engine vacuum is to successfully draw fuel from the vaporizer through the carburetor. Keep us posted.

The tractor will fire on starter fluid. It will not fire on either LP's. It will not fire on stater fluid and LP.
