Plugged Air Cleaner

I am working on a UTS Special with a gas engine. Just a few more days and it should be running. Today I started to look at the oil bath air cleaner and noticed that it is really in bad shape. It appears to be full of straw and chaff along with the typical oil mess. Is there an easy way to remove all the foreign material or take that cleaner apart to clean the filter media. What other options do I have. I would like to have this tractor running well, as both my son and I will be plowing with it this summer. Thanks for any and all help and ideas.

Take the whole canister off & put it in a 5 gallon bucket of solvent or whatever will dissolve the dirt. After the dirt settles you can pour off the liquid & see how dirty it was

What i have done on the older gasoline Us is to take the cleaner apart and wash the wire elements. The old gas air cleaners just snap apart with a sharpened screwdriver. Yours might be spotwelded together. You would have to drill out the spotwelds and weld/braze/screw/rivet it back together.

You can tell by looking at how the elements are held in just inside where the cup fastens on.

Oh-The book says to never take the filter apart. Who would have guessed we would still be running them 40 years later. . .
