I have a feshly rebuilt 585 that runs 45-48 psi oil pressure at 180 degrees f and 15w-40 oil.
When cold the oil pressure is as high as 53 psi.
My question is , should I bother to take off the oil pan and add a shim to the relief? It is an internal drive oil pump that can be adjusted at 3 psi per shim . What do you all think?

The first 585's had oil sprays in the bottom of the cyls to cool the pistons. This took a lot of oil. The company soon abandoned this idea and sent out a service letter on how to plug this off. Later blocks were cast without these coolers. You can plug these from the outside through the hole in the center bottom of the block. You could lose pressure through the seal on the can that holds the oil filter. Another problem with the internal driven oil pump was wear on the oil pump gear. In my opinion the 585 was not reliable until the oil pump was converted to external and the oil cooler was installed.

My 585 runs alot higher than that. When it is cold it runs about 80 and after warmup drops to 70. It has been running for years like that since the motor was rebuilt.

Ower 585 has about 70 cold and never gets below 65 hot even at idle. We run straight 30 wt.It has about 9 years on an overhaul.
