I need some MM advice!

I have a GB LP burner that is driving me crazy.

I have the correct service manuals and have everything set to factory specs. It starts and runs strong, then after about 30 minutes of use it starts losing power.
After an hour of use the choke has to be pulled out to keep it working.
About 30 minutes later you have to gear down.
Around 3 hours after first starting it barely can pull itself back to the tractor shed.

If you hand choke it and barely leave room for a small amount of air it perks back up a bit until you remove your hand.

This is how this tractor has been for several months and I need to get it up in shape. All of the old LP men around here are retired or worse so I am having no luck in finding help locally.

The tractor has the Ensign set up with the model R condensor.

Any help would be truely appreciated!

I think you definatly have a fuel restiction. I have many LP MMs and have farmed with them for to many years. Never had this problem. Could possibly rust or forgien object it tank, injected while filling tank. Could be the tank valve coming apart. It will get COLD when pressure decreases. Probably it is the regulater.

Jim, I'm not sure what fuel related problem would show up only after 30 mins. of satisfactory performance. But if you get to the point where you are convinced it is a fuel related problem, an IT manual will take you through the test procedures. It takes a couple of gauges but it's not a big deal. I, too would test that ignition coil. If all else fails, just drop it off at my house.

Jim, It sounds like a fuel flow problem, if you cut the air intake and it improves, not enough fuel. The icing may be a problem, I'd change the filter and make sure the lines are clear before taking the "expensive" stuff apart. The kit for the regulator is available, but it's $80 and only includes the diaphrams, no hardware.

I changed the filter and have made sure propane is getting through the lines freely (with engine off). I will check into the icing because I too feel that it is likely a fuel resriction.

Thanks!

Are you running it on the liquid valve,(you should be)?

Yes, I am running it with the correct valves open. Thanks.

sounds like 1 of 2 things to me...either something is warming up and changing tolerance ie: valve lash or coil resistance

or the vaporizer is icing up and not letting enuff gas flow...make sure you've got water flow thru vaporizer to keep it from icing

It seems that it has good water flow and there is no evidence of icing as the entire unit is nice and warm to the touch. I will check further.

Valve lash may be a good place to go, but usually valve problems will cause an engine to miss and sputter, this tractor runs smooth as it slowly loses power.

I will check into the coil.
Thanks

Jim, this may sound like a crazy theory but did you check the tank after it ran a while & lost power to see if the tank was very cold or frosty? You said you had the right valve open, I dont know if this is possible or not but if something happened inside the tank you all you may be getting is vapor even though you have the liquid valve open & it may take a couple hours of using vapor to refrigerate the fuel enough to reduce the vapor pressure to the point that it would gradually slow down rather than stop all at once. If you try this again & the tank is cold or frosty try opening the 85% level bleeder, if vapor comes out real slow then the liquid is so cold it cant change to a vapor. It would be the same as letting air out of a tire when it's about done going flat, not much pressure left...I dont know how the plumbing is made in the tanks but if a section of pipe came loose from the valve you may be getting nothing but vapor, fill it full & try it that way too.

Thanks, I will check out your theory. IThere has never been any frost build up on thye outside of any part of the fuel system and the tank has never felt cold to the touch.

I visited with an old LP man and he asked me how how the engine runs whil working it in the field. I am not sure how good my temp guage is, but the engine doesn't seem to warm up too much. He said that possibly th coolant wasn't warm enough to keep it from icing inside the regulator. I will check this out also.
