445 Steering Power Quit

I've read with interest your discussions on the 4 Star steering problems. Is the 4 Star system similar to the 445? It sounds like it. I'm looking for advice on my 445. It stopped powering the steering the other day when I was plowing snow. It was cold (maybe 10F) but not that cold. It has always worked in conditions much worse.

I turned hard right into unplowed and when I backed up, no power to the steering. I finished up but it was a job.

I topped off the hydraulic fluid (didn't really need it) but no change. Both the bucket and backblade seem to be lifting normally. Warmed it up and tried it again today to see if there might be a change due to temp (ie. air or ice in a line). It was in the 20's but no change.

No leakage is showing around the steering shaft or lines leading into the valve body (or whatevery you call the unit that powers the steering shaft up by the radiator).

Any advice would be appreciated.

This is good to know. Because I was trying to use the 4 star for my 445 also. But I still need a complete valve anyway.

The 445 and 4 Star have very similar PS systems. The recommendations posted for the 4 Star apply to your 445 for the most part. Depending on the age and 3 pt your 445 has installed, there were some eary systems that had no pressure adjustment screw on the hydraulic system (If I recall correctly). If it stopped suddenly like you described, I would look at the activation lever and see if its pivot(a roll pin) broke causing the plunger to remain centered.

Good Luck!

Actually, I am pretty sure that at least some 4stars use a different control valve than the 445 uses. The later valves say 'Ross' underneath and have 1 cover held on by two bolts. Early valves only have a MM part number and have a 2-bolt cover at each end.

I don't know all about how to troubleshoot the 445 steering, but I would screw a 0-1000 psi guage in where the pipe plug is on the rear of the 445 valve and see if there is 650-750 psi available when you turn the steering wheel. Meaning the gauge should read about nothing until you turn the steering wheel, then jump to 650-750 psi.

If it does this, you have enough pressure at the valve to do the job and the problem is probably in the valve itself.
