Which way is front

Silly question I know. I have the front end tore apart on my R and I don't remember which way the the pedistal is supposed to face. One side has a flat side on it and then curved all the way around.
Does the flat side go to the back or front. Never paid any attention. thanks for a great forum. I did find bearing and races for the steering gears. $$$$$$$$$ Should last for another 60 years.
