Talked to someone yesterday that claims he has a U-lp with the fast road gear in it? Says it's a tricycle front end. Didn't have a serial # handy for me so i could look it up. After the UDLX era, did they still offer this type of transmission in the U? Thanks for any input on these questions. TT

Does this all mean that all red nose U's had the higher road gear?

I am certain not all red nose Us were high speeds and there were some with bars grills that were high speeds.

I have a 1946 U that has the fast road gear, it goes about 25 MPH, it has the earlier shift pattern. I also have a 1946 UTS that has the slower road gear (about 15 MPH) and newer shift pattern. Both tractors have the single block KEF engines. Obviously when they changed the gear ratios in the road gear it necessated the changing of the gear shift pattern.

Red Nose Ring& Pinion ratio 2.52:1, later U 3.33:1, UB Special and Late G series 3.54:1, The old Red nose had a real slow constant mesh to offset the difference, I would like to know from someone that has had a UDLX what the other shifter dose on the trans? Does it disengage the the side shaft to quiet down the trans in road gear? I have a manual that shows it but does not tell what it does.

I have one of those old U's also they had a very slow reverse and fast road gear. This tranny was changed when they went to the 283A-4 engine, serial # 334001 mid-1947. The UDLX had a direct drive one to one set-up and all other gearing was taken out of the driveline to reduce friction.

Hi Joe!

Just to add a little more to what Joe said. The high speed Us had a different shifting pattern than the other Us. I can not say with certainty that all high speed Us had a differnet shifting pattern but the standard U had 2-1-5 accross the top gear pattern. The high speeds are 2-3-5. I do not know why they did this but that seems to be a common difference in the hight speed Us.

Texas T, We also own a U with a FAST road gear, like 40 mph if you are brave enough. Our tractor is a older single block U of the same age as the UDLX"s the big difference is the UDLX has a two stick trans and ours is a one stick trans, also the brakes are different on the UDLX, i think they are on the axle and not on the side of the trans housing like the early U"s. Our"s is a wide front and it does wobble when you go fast, and there is no way to start out in 5th gear unless you coast it down a hill then jam the clutch lever forward and hope it don"t stall out and if you come to a hill it won"t hold speed. So I don"t know if it was by design or they just needed a gear to fill the trans and they had some of these left and they got put in or what but it is really not to handy a gear to use. joe

Does anyone know why they had a faster road gear in these U's? Was it just in the U's, or was it also in the R's and Z's?

Also I wonder why they changed the gear placement?

I've had both a '45 and '47 model U....they don't have the same transmission cover, yet, they both have the KEF engine. So you can't necessarily say that the new transmission came with the new engine.
