UTS Engine Work

I am working on my 1948 UTS (LP). I have stripped it down so that currently, it consists of the engine (block, pan, heads and valve covers), transmission/differential, rear tires/wheels and front end including tires and wheels. I didn't think it needed engine work, so hadn't planned on that. However, now that I have removed all the engine parts (manifolds, fan, gen, starter, oil filter, etc.), it appears that I have some significant leaks. I now think that I need to tear the engine down and replace seals and overhaul if needed. However, this is beyond my skill level. My question is, can I take this tractor to a mechanic as is and have the engine worked over. Then paint and reassemble the parts? If this makes sense, can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the eastern Iowa or surrounding area that would be willing to tackle a job such as this?

say i have an origionalmaintenance manual for MM UNIVERSAL AND sTANDARD tRACTORS,wHAT WOULD IT BE WORTH?I THINK I NEED A LITTLE KEYBOARD TRAINING.THE MANUAL IS LIKE NEW EXCEPT FOR A LITTLE FADING ON THE COVER,ITS A Number S-119

Gary, I think maybe you should give yourself a little more credit than that. Go get yourself a good I & T book on that covers all the minnie mo"s and do a little reading. It will cover quite a bit on information on the tractor and what can"t be answered there it can be answered on either this site or the other one. The book is in sections for different models as well so it is really easy to under stand. A U engine is really pretty basic and I think you can get it.

Thanks, Kevin. I may take a shot at it. I have an original service manual that covers the 283 A4 engine. I do have people that I can go to for advice as well. Do you know if the engine must be removed or split from the transmission? Would an IT manual provide anything that the original would not?

Well it depends on what you are going to rebuild and overhaul on it, however it does make it easier to do on an engine stand. Also if the front tranny seal is dried out and leaking it will have to be split. A good rule of thumb when spliting the tractor for the first time is to replace the clutch. I do even if it looks ok because the linings do break down over time and it may be glazed, warped, or coming apart. You never know how the person before treated it. Besides after you get her all painted and clean up the clutch goes out and then you have to do it and get your paint messed up. Clutches are not that expensive. As far as original vs I & T goes I would think it would be ok to use it but an I & T wouldn't hurt to have as well. I have not really looked into an original one to compare notes with the other one. I know the I & T will cover the tranny, brakes, rearend and all the other stuff as well. Also where one may not explain itself as good the other may. They run around 30.00 on ebay as a norm with the price. Email me if you need more help and also my 1950 UTS was my first tractor to get my feet wet on.
