Oil Pressure Gauges Gone Wild!

I am looking for some advise. Bought a 1952 Minneapolis Moline ZAU tractor. The generic oil pressure gauge was bobbing up and down, never advancing over 20 PSI, no matter how much I adjusted the regulator (I think it's a bad gauge). I put an oil pump that I know is working from an identical tractor on it, same thing. I put the oil pressure gauge from the identical tractor on it and it will not go over 20 PSI, no matter how much I adjusted the regulator (I think it's a bad gauge). I then put a newer reproduction gauge from John Deere on it and the pressure went all the way over to the highest side of HIGH! Can't get it to come down below that high reading, no matter how much I adjusted the regulator!! As you can see, I am now absolutely confused as to where to set the regulator! Is there a hugh diffence in the manufacture of gauges? I think the oil pressure is probably fine, but have no way of telling. I have heard that some reproduction gauges are not all they are cracked-up to be. I am looking for suggestions on where to purchase a reliable oil pressure gauge for a 1952 MM tractor. Thank you.

JKC - Was the JD oil gage you used for a JD 2 cylinder tractor perhaps? Many of the JD 2 cylinders (even the early diesels...) operated with a normal oil pressure in the 12 - 15 psi range. The factory "low-normal-high" oil gages thus will peg out at around 20 psi. So your pegged JD gage may simply be telling you it's running at 20+ psi.

The gage issue aside, if a known good pump cannot provide more than 20 psi the cause is likely excessive wear in the main, crankpin and camshaft bearings. However if your Z can hold 20 psi after it's fully warmed up, it will live a long and happy life this way - I wouldn't be to concerned.

A seller on E-bay is selling new MM gauges made by Rochester that are very nice and I expect, reasonably accurate. There is a diference in gauges and their sensitivity. Sounds like 20 psi is all you're going to get and that may be reflective of the overall condition of cam, rod and main bearings; they may all be worn out.

IF YOU ARE NOT PARTICULAR ABOUT THE MM IN THE GUAGE YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH S&W GUAGES AVAILABLE MOST EVERYWHERE YOU GAN GET THE THREE BASIC GUAGES FOR ABOUT $70 WITH A WHITE FACE AND A CROME/NICKLE RING THEY LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THE MM GUAGES W/O THE MM ON THE FACE AND THEY ARE A QUALITY GUAGE.
