UB Oil usage

I've got a MM UB (1953) that is burning about 1 quart of oil per hour. Could this be the valves or bad rings? It seems like a lot of oil. Maybe its not worth worrying about??

It is a lot, I think. I'm pulling a 3 bottom plow and 12 foot disk. The tractor is gasoline. Do I just jump in and try replacing the rings? I'm new at this, so any help would be appreciated

That sounds like a lot to me.

Is it LP, gasoline or a Diesel?

What are you pulling?

I did discover something...the oil pressure nut/bolt under the filter assembly was broken. I got it from a guy who said the assembly was from a diesel, and I assumed diesel's didn't have one. But I looked closer, replaced the nut. Last summer the UB was running an oil pressure of 35 pounds, the manual sas 25. Could the extra 10 pounds or so cause it to burn/use oil? I can't pull anything or get the machine really warm in this weather...so I'm not sure if that fixed the problem...

what kind of oil you running in it??? mite try some straight 40 weight and see if consumption goes down...higher oil pressure shouldnt make it burn oil but it mite make it leak more...i dont see how you run that tractor if its burning that much oil....must be like driving thru a fog bank

I don't think its leaking. Its not getting into the coolant. The tranny does leak. Could the engine oil be getting into the tranny and leaknig out there? Would 40 weight oil cause problems for the tractor engine? I've considered using 40 wt but worried about engine damage. I'm only farming 5 acres but the tractor is used even for combining (have a IH-82 pull type) and wood splitting. It does seem to smoke lots more when the engine is hot. I'm also having starting problems. I have to short the resistor going to the coil to start it. The burnt oil might have fouled the plugs. I do have a picture of me plowing...I would call it a big blue haze.

40 weight wont hurt it...i run castrol grand prix 70 weight in my ford during the summer and castrol 40 in winter
that ole engine is just plum tuckered out...first time its sittin still long enuff pull the head and pan and at least do a inframe overhaul...price of oil these days it'll be cheaper than fillin that puppy up every hour.

are you sure the tranny is leaking??? gear lube and oil have a different smell all together so make sure its not rear main seal on engine leaking...that would explain a qt. an hour.

It stinks like heavy oil stinks...but I'm curious now...where is the rear seal located? Do I have to separate the tractor to see that?
