Where can you buy a rivet???

Does anyone know where you can buy "real" rivets (not pop rivets)? The transmission cover on my UTS has a 5/16" X 3/4" round head rivet that is located in the gear shift lever "collar". The slot in the ball of the shift lever fits over the head of this rivet. This is what keeps the shift lever from twisting. Does anyone know where a rivet such as this can be found? I've tried all kinds of hardware stores, farm stores, even Fastenal. No luck. Otherwise, does anyone have a viable alternative to this rivet? Is there a bolt head (perhaps modified) that would work?

Thanks for the great suggestions. With my limited skill level, I am going to try to buy one before trying to make something. I had tried our local Fastenal store with no luck. Simply said they didn't have anything. Seems like they have something on their web site. I have worked in an industrial setting and bought stuff from McMaster Carr for 27 years, but didn't think of them for this. That is a great idea. Also made me think of Grainger. We have a store fairly close (Cedar Rapids, Ia.).

Gary, What I did on my '53 ZAS was get a 5/16 groove pin from the John Deere dealer. it wasn't fluted or knurled like the old pin but was a drive fit in the hole. I then drove it in the hole and sawed off the extra sticking out.

I also had to have the groove in the shifter handle built up and ground back to shape.

I know where you can find the rivet, it is in Manawa,Wis. 920-596-3100. The Jones,Farm store is going out of business after 50 years they have what you need,or call UB Nuts 920-867-3386.

A google search for "rivet" found several results. The alternative is to put a piece of 5/16" round stock in a vise and form your own head on it with a ball pein hammer (so that's what the "ball pein" is for!), then trim to length.

Have you tried McMaster Carr? Maybe 5/16 rod thru a 5/16 hole in a piece of metal. clamp in a vise with about 5/16 sticking thru. peen and cut to length after it's removed from the metal.
