I am restoring a 1946 ZTN. I have it pretty tripped down. However, I cannot get the governor out. In reading from my shop manual, it says to remove the 4 bolts and remove. It will slightly rotate, but it will not come loose. Is there something else I should be doing? I have the cover plate to the side of the engine off, but still see no reason why it will not come out. Am I missing something? I would appreciate any suggestions. Jerry in California

I finally had time to work on the governor. I did get it out. The collar in the side of the crankcase was just crusted in there. I applied some good pressure pulling on it while tapping lightly on each side and after a few minutes, it began to move. It still took 15 minutes of patience, but it is out and looks really good. Thanks for the comments. Jerry

If you can rotate the governor, the gear probably has a layer of goo built up on the gear end. This is from many years of 'SB' oil leaving the gear end filled. Make sure you allow the governor to rotate when applying even pressure with two roll pry bars. Spray in a lot of clorinated solvent to cut the buildup. Open up the other side to get the gear exposed for direct spray and a bit of brass bar tapping. Remember to replace the ball bearing, in the governor, after doing this forced removal. You will need a grade three #6203 bearing with a single metal shield for a replacement. They are cheap and available everywhere.

It should be ready to come out. I'd do like Brian suggested and tap on the end of the driveshaft.

That worked for me the first time I pulled the governor out of mine. There was some crust between the governor housing and the crankcase. It just needed a little gentle pursuasion.

Hi, Your book is right, remove those 4 bolts and the rod that goes to the carb. Being able to rotate it a bit tells me it is loose on the side, so it must be tight inside. Try tapping it a bit.
