I have a Model "U" Diesel tractor.
Does anyone know anything about these things?
I just can't find anything on any of the antique tractor sites.
It has a D-283-4 engine, American Bosch fuel system, and a starter that is different than those on the "U" gas tractors.
Need parts,HELP!

Does anyone know about the starter?
Is it the same as the other MM diesel starters?

All the diesel 4 cylinder starters are the same in U,5star,M5,M602. I had an extra one but sold it to a guy in Sask. The Canadian prairies is where you will find most U diesels.

If you can get the motor unstuck. The blocks off a 425ci Gv1,GBD,Massey 95 will fit. Injectors off M5,Five Star all the same. I used a injection pump off a 5 star for one of mine. The last one I rebuilt was seized on number two. I used a gasket kit and rings for a 425ci,just had extra set of rings and gaskets. This is the third
U diesel I rebuilt. I have five altogether. A 1954 like yours,2-1956 utsd specials,1-utsd-m,and an early parts U.

Jaeckel's Salvage in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin has a fairly complete U diesel for parts. Their number is 920-563-3447

There is several different variations of the U diesel. Early U diesel 52-55 had tin and grill like gas. The block and crankcase were different than the U gas. In 56 the tin was changed as well as the crankcase. These had flat fronts like a G and were called specials. What parts do you need? I have a scrap one.

The U that I have is the one with the old style curved grille and hood like the gas model, in fact I bought a salvage gas tractor because it has a perfect grille, hydraulics, and PTO for my diesel. My engine is stuck. But it is because of water damage in the cylinders. The bottom end looks good so far, Knock on wood. I don"t know if I can, but I was hoping I could use the cylinder block units from the gas engine, and replace the pistons.
I know I"ll need injectors and pump parts. I"ll also need valves, rings, gaskets, and probably a lot of other stuff. (still tearing down!)

Thanks for the quick responses.
It"s nice to find someone who REALLY knows something about these things.
I was hooked on this old "U" the first time I saw it.
My hope is to do a show quality restoration on this one.
Thanks again D.W.

The U diesel cylinders have extra head bolt studs and can not be swapped with the gas cylinders. If your pistons are still good you might be able to find a set of cylinders from a 425 diesel as they should be the same. I'm currently rebuilding a UBED and am using G900 diesel pistons which are 1/8" overbore for the U diesel engine. Pay close attention to your upper ring groove as too much ether had a tendency to wallow out that upper ring groove.

I do not have enough experience with the diesel "U", but I do know that my 1958 UTSD-M does not have the flat grill similar to the "G". The tin on my tractor is very typical of a UTS. I suppose the "M" version of the "U" diesels were probably a means of using up all the left over "U" stuff anyway. Does anyone know for sure?

Andy,

I have already got the big bore blocks, pistons and rings machined and ready to fit. I plan to use the original heads but do need some hydraulic stuff.
