I have what apperars to be an RTE. The front end is factory RTE, The serial numbers on the transmission show it as a 49 RTU. Were there any discrepancies with the serial numbers in this series or did someone change front ends on this tractor? Also, the clutch doesn't snap in and has some slippage. Is there any adjustment on these clutches similar to a Rockwell Clutch?

augie your imfo you posted here was very handy this weekend,I just installed a new clutch and fly wheel in my rtu,and would never have figured out how to adjust the clutch seeing I could not find my book on the tractor,I think my wife hid it on me thanks for the help ps

Lynn,
It's likely someone swapped the front end on your RTU for an RTE front end. This is not too difficult of a task and not uncommon either. The serial #s are quite accurate especially in 1948-50 with the unique serial # prefixes for each type of R model.

Remove the clutch inspection cover on the left side of the torque tube. Peek inside and you'll see a plate with a series of half-moon notches around the circumference - that's your adjusting disc. There's a spring-loaded button that engages a notch to lock the disc in place.

Likely it's been quite awhile since any of that was apart, lubed and adjusted. Chances are you'll have to split the tractor to get things freed up. Call Wendell Everett for new friction lining material if the old stuff is shot. Clean the crusty stuff out of the throwout collar, disassemble and clean the pressure plate, paying particular attention to the condition of the rollers, roller levers and springs. Put a bit of gun grease on the rollers when you reassemble.

It wouldn't be unusual to find the pivot points on the external clutch linkage parts to be fairly well worn out. If that stuff is real sloppy you can install bushings to take up the slack. The fork that engages the throwout collar can also cause problems due to excessive wear. You may need to braze up the fork and/or collar if they're badly worn.
