I have an old MM model U Serial 7200042 Engine Model 283B-4 Looks mostly complete has an Ottawa Loader/Backhoe attached to it. I aquired it 15 years ago from the original owner. He worked it till he retired I think he told me that was in the sixties. The engine is locked up and has been since before I got it. I have a decent shop (overhead hoist, welders, and tools needed to work on autos)and the ability to use them. I have rebuilt cars ranging from Model T's to GTO's. Now comes the questions; I have never tackled anything of this size. Is this a project that a man with some degree of mechanical ability has a resonable chance of completing? Does this tractor have more value as a machine to work around my place or is of more use to a collector? I am only in the starting to consider this project stage, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you in advance Russ

parts are available and relatively easy to get. You can get bearings, seals, etc from several locations, (dealers, napa) and you can get used parts from a lot of different sources. Just ask here and someone will point you in the right direction on where to get a part. Basically, you can get any part you need for a U.

I rebuilt my U in my garage with just common hand tools and some muscle. I had the engine completely apart, just made some 'spliting stands'. If you can rebuild and GTO and have a shop, the U will be a piece of cake. Have fun and welcome to MM's.

From my experience, your biggest problem is the loader on it. The other issue is the size of the engine parts. And you said you had an engine hoist. beyond that its smilar to a car engine and in some ways more simple.

On my first U, I tried assembling the engine and then mating it to the transmission. I broke a s'posed to be 1,000lb capacity el-cheapo ratchet hoist.

The last 2 Us I did, I put the crank in the crankcase with the pulley, flywheel and clutch in place, bolted it to the transmission and put the front end on and then put the rest of the engine parts onto it. I even used the hoist to put the block/piston assemblies on. And I used a floor jack to lift the oil pan into position.

If you can rebuild a GTO you should have no problems.
