UTS 5th Gear

Anyone have experience with a UTS slipping out of 5th gear? It appears that the shifter is getting the rod into the right spot. The detent ball is in good shape. The shifter rod is worn between the 5th gear and neutral spot. Also, when it is in 5th gear, there is probably at least 1/8" of "play" of the gear on the fork. Appears that maybe the gear is worn, the fork is worn and/or sprung a little, and the rod is worn. Any good ideas on how to fix this? An "old timer" told us to remove the pin that holds the fork on the rod. Then put it into gear and hold it solid into gear. Then drill a new hole in the fork hub and rod for the pin. This will cause it to go solid into 5th gear again. Anyone else have any experience with this?

You need to take the top off the transmission and check the pinion bearings and rear roller bearing on the top transmission shaft. When either or both of these are loose it will jump out of fifth and usually some of the others if pulled hard.

Thanks. I currently have the top off the transmission. I'm going to show my ignorance. How do you check these bearings? Will the top shaft has some movement in it?

Get a couple three foot bars and see if you can move the pinion shaft back and forth. Then see if you can move the main shaft sideways.
