445 hydraulic problem

I recently bought a MM 445; I believe its a 1956 utility? (s/n BP1 10201213) The power steering and 3pt work fine, but the loader bucket only raises 2ft or so and lowers back down immediately when you let go of the lever. Could this be an adjustment on the remote spool setting or do I need to remove & rebuild the hydraulic unit? Is it something a novice can tackle? Would like to try repairing the problem before going to a PTO pump & seperate hydraulic system. Thanks Paul

under the seat is a rectangle plate with 4 bolts holding it fill er up till 1 inch from the top..should do the trick..check your centering springs on the levers.jury rig fixed the spring..i had a spring broke..everything was whacky..made some adjustments on the little screws under the plate that contol the spool valves..lots better..you have to drain the fluid from that cavity to see the adjustments..dont know if yours has this or not..the drain plug for the resivoir might have a threaded stud on it,,this holds in a pipe that supplys pressure to the spools..make sure it goes back in to hold the pipe inside..i have a 445 56 with the moline loader also universal..if you can send me a pic..like to see it..gregg in ohio

Paul,
The power steering gets the first 1-2 GPM from the pump so it working only tells you that the pump is pumping at least that much and there is at least some fluid in the resevoir.

If by the 3pt working fine you mean that it raises a load at a reasonable speed and holds it there that tells you that the pump is likely working OK and at least the 3 point spool and cylinder are OK.

The loader bucket only raising 2ft or so likely means that it raises to that point before all the oil in the resevoir is used. Are the main lift cylinders one way or two way?

Lowering back down immediately when you let go of the lever is another problem. The most likely problem is that that spool is not centering properly. You can check it by holding the lever slightly off of the center position one way or the other. One way the loader will likely drop faster. The other way it should hold the loader in position. I'm assuming the centering springs on the remote levers are not broken and are doing their job properly. If one of the spools need to be centered, you will need to take the system apart. An I&T manual has a setup procedure that is pretty good but if you have specific questions feel free to ask.

A 445 won't make most loaders operate very fast but will work satisfactorily other than being somewhat slow. IF your main lift cylinders are only one way, the system likely won't have enough fluid capacity to operate them.

The cylinders for the loader arms & bucket are two way, I filled the reservoir to about 1" from the cover ( will try adding to 1/2") also the 3pt raises & lowers but haven"t tried it with a load yet. Thanks for the feed back. Paul

My 335 would not raise the bucket until I filled the reservoir to 1/2 inch from the top. The level was so low I could not see any while looking from the inspection port. My manual calls for A type tranny fluid.
