Hi, My book lists the UB special (gas) was made only in 1955. The UB special diesels were made from 1955-57. Did they make a whole slug of the gas model in 1955? and then took several years to sell them?

Here's another turn on this subject I have a UBE LP special that has a serial# tag also on the front axle, the first for me to see a rear housing with tag and engine and front end. I have a UB gas and a UTS also specials.

LW,
Does the front axle have a unique serial #? That's a new one on me. I've never seen or heard of a front axle having a serial number tag. I wonder if it fits any of the known MM serial number series. I wonder if this is something they did with the early UB Special interchangeable front ends. My UBD Special is a narrow front and I don't remember it being tagged. I doubt they could find a place to tag it anyway. Very interesting..... .

Yeah Brian its a MM tag, I went to texas to get the tractor picked up in a snake infested swamp in the dark (rattle snakes!). I didn't realize that it had that tag until the next morning. I can get the #'s off it if you would like to research it I haven't had time to do much with the tractor I ran it and covered the exhaust. I plan to restore it when I get time.

LW,
Yes, I would like to research that unique tag a little more. Email the numbers to me when you get a chance.

Brian

Just to add. 283 diesels were used in the U specials in 1956. The 283 diesel parts were used in the UTSD-M also in 57 and 58. The Utsd-M used the crankcase of the early 283 diesel. I 1957 the five star used the 336.

I think the UB Special Ser# info is a mistake on this site. I was a dealer at the time and My recolection is no UB Specials were built until 1956. Also My recollection is the 5-star diesel had the 336 engine. Also my recollection has been wrong before but I'm pretty sure it's right on this.

I am going by and using Lloyd McCray's newest book he put out. It covers MM,Oliver,Cletrac,Cockshutt & White serial numbers from 1901 to 1991. I know he has do a lot of research on this and I think it is the best book out there on this subject. Just my .02 worth.

Brian,
You are essentially correct. Keep in mind that the 5 Star came out in 1957 to replace the UB Special. If you consider how few UBD Specials were produced especially in 1956 and 57 (164 and 56 respectively) it would make sense that MM was probably not pushing the sale of the UB anymore and was gearing up for 5 Star production. They probably made the decision to use up their UB Special parts with diesel production. Keep in mind the 5 Star still used the 283 gas and LP engine where the diesel was using the new 336 engine. So MM's stock of 283 diesel parts were probably used up on the last few years of UB Special production where as their 283 gas parts could still be used on the new 5 Star.

Sorry, this isn't an answer Brian, it's another question. When they say gas, does that include the LP models? If so, then does anyone know how many gas/LP models were made in that one year. I have an LP Special.

Curt: The mobel UB special gas/lp started with serial number:09700001-07901475 in 1955 only. I was told it was close to a 60/40 mix on most models. 60%gas 40%LP.
