I am having problem with diesaling with a 403 with 4210 heads on it (180 PSI). I found that the advance in my distributer was froze up. Could this have contributed to the run on?

I have a M5 gas with 4210 heads My Dad bought it new set up that way. It always ran on when we shut it down even years ago with leaded gas. We just always idled it all the way down to kill it. Still works good after 45 years. Dave

BCnT, I'm going to install 4210s on my GTB/LP, am I going to have a problem with the "dieseling" also? I am thinking the 4210s will be a great addition to my GTB for field work, taking off 4209s. I never anticipated anything like the dieseling, just would like your or anybodys input on this on an LP tractor, 403 stock. Thanks, John

i dont know anything about that particular motor...my opinion was over the 180# of compression he claims to have.

with that much compression everything is going to have to be spot on...with todays gas i'd say timing retarded too much will cause a prob in that department...are you running octane booster and premium gas?

I tried the highest octane pump gas and lost lugging power. These heads are unmodified. I took off 4209 heads that were shaved 1/8 and had the intake bored 1/4 along with 3 angle valve grind. I didn't run on with those heads.

dieseling or run on is caused by a few things...high compression generates heat which will ignite unburned fuel exactly like a diesel engine...also if the idle is set too high on carb it allows enuff fuel into engine to continue the run on...the other cause of run on is pre ignition caused by excessive carbon buildup in combustion chamber and i've also run across worn valves with real thin edges that actually glow and act as ignition sources...try reducing absolute low idle speed first...if that doesnt help you might consider a colder thermostat.

i dont see why you lost lugging power with good gas unless your coil/mag is getting weak.

You lost lugging because you have to change your timing with the higher octain gas.
