I"am in the process of getting an RTI running. I need to replace the cylinder blocks, but what I have are 1462 blocks standard bore with pistons with the hump on them. Will I run into any problem with this arrangment? The broken blocks were 101a with flat top pistons.

I'am somewhat confused on the 1462 block. What actually is the diffrence between the 101? I have a 54 ZB that have 101 on it. Did the manafacture make the 1462 as replacement for the 101? AS I thought they were the original equipment that came on the ZB. Also both tages are unreadable the engine tag is missing. and the transmission tag is half rusted off. But if I were to remove the tag I might be able to get an imprint off the back. As soon as I can I will get the original piston number as Jim mentioned the piston numbers.

Roger,
I don't know what is exactly different between the blocks. I can tell you that the RE 9033 (RE101 casting) was replaced by RE 1462 in the repair parts substitution list I have from 1973. This would mean that the 1462 is a replacement for the 9033 part number. I would speculate there may be another attachment boss or possibly some internal casting differences. I personally have not had the opportunity to compare the 1462 and 101 castings but I have not gone looking at all my 165 and 206 engines to see what cylinders they have either.

Some possible ways to identify your RTI year. Does your engine side cover have a place to mount a hydraulic pump near the breather and oil fill pipe? This cover was used from mid 1950 to late 1951 (eng ser # 0175001651 to 01704286). It appears in the beginning of 1952 they started using the 2648 and 2647 heads on the RTI. Starting at late 1951 serial # 00500596 they went to 2 brake pedals on the RTI. Prior to that there was only one pedal. Starting in late 1951 they used a TSX-497 carb. From mid 49 thru 51 they used a TSX-231 carb. This info came from repair catalog R-1049D.

I hope you find it useful to identify the approximate year of your RTI.

Brian

The cyl blocks you have are the correct ones for the RTI as were the ones you took of. The domed pistons are the correct ones for the EE engine only, IF one is to bore the EE engine with the flat top pistons, the compression will only be enough to run the engine, NO power. IF using the flat top pistons on the EE engine, the head should be one of the LP heads to make enough compression to use it. If using the domed pistons, the RE226C head will make good power. Not sure this will be clear, if you have a question, email grandfieldfarm at peoplepc.com I'm changine my email address SOON. Thanks, John

Roger,
Yes, dome pistons with 226c head is correct.

The flat tops work with the 5" stroke crank, the dome tops work with the 4" stroke crank. Just in case your R has the 206 cu in. engine. The 5" stroke crank will have a center main bearing and the 4" stroke crank won't.

Thanks for the information, I was wondering if this tractor would have to much compression. The tractor originally had a 2648 head and 101 blocks with flat top pistons. It must be a four inch stroke for it does not have a center main. let me know if there is any thing I should consider putting all these pieces together.

Roger,

I'm thinking you have a late (1952 and up) RTI with the engine upgrade that came with all engines No. 01705441 and after. These engines had the 10A2648 or 10A2647 heads with factory flat top pistons, 10A2930. That number will be cast into the inside of the skirt. Why not keep it original and with more power by using the 1462 blocks with the 2930 flat top pistons and the 2648 head? I'm assuming most people will not nit-pick and call the replacement (and used on ZB's) 1462 blocks original. If you are not concerned with originality you could always use the snow drift pistons with the 226C head and sell the 2648 head to a puller.

It's not that I wouldn't like to keep it orginal this is all I could scrap together to make a running tractor the old blocks and head and pistons were destroyed by water left in it. I thought I could bring this old tractor back to life after setting in a bone yard. But am unfamiliar as to what is orginal. "I need help", even the serial number is unreadable. But if they used the 2648 head after 52 thats a step in the right direction thanks for the info.

Roger,
Are both serial # tags unreadable? There's one on the trans and one on the engine. As Kevin stated with the 4" stroke, 226c head and dome pistons your RTI will run fine. This was the standard gasoline combination used before the 2648 head and flat top piston combination was introduced. If someone questions the later block part number just tell them they're replacement blocks as I'm sure if you needed to replace them in the late 50's that's probably the part number you'd get.
