Positive to Negative Ground

What all is involved in changing the MM"U" from
a positive ground to a negative ground ? And from 6 volt to 12 volt ? And do away with the points ? But not sure just what all is involved.

Positive to negative is no more than moving wires side to side on the amp gauge and repolarizing the generator and replacing the coil (if you have a coil. You didn't say if your U has a distributor or a mag). Going from 6 to 12 will require replacement of the generator with a 12 volt generator. Elimination of points - I would consult the ad for that on this site and see if that can be done. I'm quite sure, if you have a distributor and not a mag, that it can be done. Good luck.

On changing too a negative ground:
I thought that I would just have to change the wires around on the battery and go. But a friend said there was more to it than that. I guess there is a deferance in the coil? I thought there might be a problem with the starter also. Yes the "U" has a distributor. ON the 12 Volt system
I thought the points & coil had to be 6 Volt to keep from burning them.
And the genarator would have to be changed to 12 Volt.

The reason these guys are saying to change the coil is because you are going from 6v to 12v, not because you are changing polarity from pos ground to neg.

You either have to install a resistor in the circuit to the coil or you have to change to a 12v coil with extra internal resistance. Most guys opt to just install a 12v coil because the installation looks cleaner and the original coil is getting pretty old anyway. NAPA's IC64SB is usually around $20.

Also if you do go from 6 volt to 12 volt you may want to get a 12 volt starter as well. 6 volt will work if you don't stay cranking on it. "For awhile any way".
