Started working on a '49 RTU. New points, distributor cap & plugs. Set timing. Did dry and wet compression test and found 70# & 80# on 2,3,& 4. found 80# and 90# on 1. Switched wires between 1 & 2, #1 misses. Valve clearance is OK. There is a loud pop when reving the engine. Any Ideas?

It could also be your valvle lash. If it's set too tight it won't let the exhust valve close completely. I think the should be .008 intake and .010 exhaust when the engine is at operating temp.

I had a U that did that and it had an eroded exhaust valve seat. The popping was the fuel mix exploding in the exhaust manifold.

Thanks Guys. I just tried the oil trick and it seemed to help. The valves didn't seem to stick when I pushed them by hand. The exhaust still has some poping but much less than before. The miss has cleared up for now. Thanks again.

somebody told me awhile back if a MM has a miss after its been sitting awhile to pull valve covers and squirt oil on the valve stems...with that pop it sounds like a sticky valve to me.
