M-M - Avery connection

I'm a JD guy, but I'm rebuilding an engine for a friend. He says the tractor is an M-M, but it looks like an Avery to me. The engine is 4-cyl with 2 5/8 inch bore. It looks a lot like the Hercules engines in L-series Deeres, with many of the same parts (fan, conn rods, etc.). I need to find rings, valves, and gasket set to do this engine right, but have had no sucess in locating them. Any ideas? Thanks.

There should be a # stamped into the frame on the right side up toword the side of the engine, that'll tell you what it is. seems like 6V???? would be appropriate, could be 7V

Thanks for the help, gents. The engine block had a tag on the upper left to the rear, but it is long gone.

Xmus,
If your 2-5/8" bore x 3" stroke Hercules is a 4 cyl then the tractor is a "V" model. Moline continued selling/making the Avery V in Moline colors with an adjustable wide front end after they bought Avery. The engine in the late V tractors was a ZXB3 model. The early versions may have been a slightly different model. There should have been a small tag attached to the block originally.

I guess there is no tag on the engine.

Bill Williams in Baldwyn MS is the MM/Avery guy. I don't have his phone number, perhaps information can help.

Also, Zimmerman Oliver/Cletrac in Pennsylvania may be able to help if its the IX series Hercules engine, as it was used in Cletrac and Oliver tractors.

P.S. Don't throw the old head gasket away until you have the new one in hand! they used to be hard to come by.

You can go to www.minneapolis-moline.com there they have the parts sources listing Bill's info. He's a very good source for all the Avery stuff as well as MM.
