Hello Boys, I need your help. I just recently overhauled my 1950 zau. Rebuilt the carb and all. My problem is it will only run for a few seconds then die. Is this due to not having the gas tank mounted on the tractor? I am using a fuel jug set behind the battery for fuel supply. Do these tractors require enough fuel in the tank to force fuel into the carb?

I've used a 1 quart lawn mower tank on a number of tractors and it works every time. I'd say you still have a problem in the carb. First thing I'd do it remove the drain plug at the bottom and make sure you get a good flow of gas.

Is the cap tight on the fuel jug? I don't know what you are using, but you aren't expecting it to siphon out the top, are you? Your fuel source needs to gravity flow out the bottom of the container.

Kelvin, I am siphon feeding it. It has worked for me until yesterday when I tried to drive it around.I am very confused by all this . Really need your help.

Fred, I think your fuel supply needs to be in something with a bottom outlet. The tractor will need more fuel when you are driving-The governor opens the throttle under load and it stays open to maintain speed under load.
(And also the sloshing might break the suction of your siphon.) If you don't want to put the original tank on, get a lawnmower gas tank as a substitute. I keep a 1-1/2 pint tank around just for that purpose.
Another thing: whatever fuel source you use needs to be a good steady stream of gasoline, not just a dribble, so make sure your filter if you use one is o.k. for gravity flow (some only flow adequately under pressure.)

The only times I've witnessed siphon feed from a jug to an engine that large, the engine had a fuel pump.

KELVIN, I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM IN THE PAST. I WILL EVEN DO IT UNDER IDLE AND IN NEUTRAL ALSO. JUST SPUTTERS AND DIES. BUT I CAN WORK THE CHOKE A LITTLE AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO IDLE BACK AND RUN FOR SOMETIMES A MINUTE OR TWO THEN SOMETIMES ONLY A FEW SECONDS.

If you are getting a good supply of gas to the carb then is the carb assembled correctly and the screws turned out about 2 turns? It should run, even roughly, until you adjust it. Do you have spark when it stalls?
