My ZTN is a 1946. It appears there is some disagreement as to what decals really go on this tractor and exactly where they go. I would like so see a picture showing the correct loction. For example, a serach of the Z's on this site show the "Z" above the lights, some show it just below and others show it at the bottom of the radiator. Also, some show the MM logo above the engine curtain hinge while other Z's do not have it at all. How can I be sure what decals to use and be certain where they go? Jerry

John is right on the money. I have seen some of the early ZT pictures that I believe had "Universal Z" across the deacal on the gas tank. Have you seen those John?

Correct decals for MM Z in reply to Alan K, 10-24-2005 19:55:29
Alan, In 1999, I was at the Macon County, MO show and was priviledged to see an original 1941 ZTU owned by Ted Linge of South Dakota with an original 4x7 inch Decal on the gas tank with the letters "Universal Z" across the center. It looked just like the current 4x7 reproduction decals, but instead of the words "Minneapolis-Moline" across the center it had "Universal Z."

Gaylen Mohr (712 677-2491) makes excellent decals both in color and correct lettering. He has reproduced the 4X7 Z decal for the gas tank that reads Universal Z in the middle of the MM, but I believe it is correct for the older ZT's, say 1936 thru early 1940's. Gaylen is an excellent resource, and if you call him with your serial number he will sell you only the decals you need. While you have him on the phone, I suggest you subscribe to the MM collectors club magazine he publishes, (The MM Corresponder). You will enjoy the pictures, stories, and wealth of information in the magazine.

Another item that is correct for the early Z's is the grill emblem. Although the grill emblem was stopped by MM after WWII started and never used after that, I personally like it and would put one on any red faced U, R, or Z with the red mesh wire grills.

Thanks for the kind words,
John McLucas

Your 46 ZTN should only have one decal on each side of the gas tank. There is no "Z" or "Minneapolis Moline" decal on the 1946. Don't forget the 1/8 inch red pin stripes on the bottom of the hood louvers for your 1946, (same red as the wheels...originally hand brushed freehand, but I cheat and tape mine up before applying.)

May people are confused when they buy a decal kit that contains many decals for all models and think that they should be applied somewhere.

Check out the link below for correct decals placement on the Z and R Molines.

John: Are there any Warning or Information Decals or is the 4" X 7" MM decal on the gas tank the only one? Thanks for your valuable information. I am amazed how much knowledge some of you guys have. I am just starting my first restoration. Thanks for your assistance. Jerry in California. [email protected]

Jerry,
I do not know when MM began putting warning and instruction decals on their equipment. I doubt if the 1946 models had any decals such as the air filter decal that comes in kits or any warning decals. The warning decals probably appeared in the 1960's and 1970's when safety and manufacturer liability concerns began to surface.

I have a new old stock pan seat that I purchased at an auction several years ago. It has the words "Minneapolis Moline" stenciled painted in red across the back. The letters are about one inch high. I do not know which year it was manufactured, but the seat is prairie gold 2 which was used from 1938-1959. I have seen "MM" decals placed on many restored deluxe seat backs, but do not know when of if that was ever correct. Maybe someone on this board knows more. The best information comes from looking at original tractors that you know have never been repainted. I wish more people would bring originals to shows because that is what many of us would like to see.

When doing a restoration it is good to take careful note of any existing decals and their location. I find it best to take pictures and measurements because once it is removed it is hard to remember exactly. Even if the tractor has been repainted before you may find evidence of a decal that was painted over. Light sanding will often show the location and sometimes even the lettering.
Good luck with your 1946. The "Z" is my favorite MM tractor.
