I am about to reassemble brakes on a 335 , and replacing the oil seal in the backing plate,on one side, Problem , presently the lip of the old seal is facing outwards towards the wheel , me thinks it is in backwards , should not the lip face towards the oil ?. The IT illustration does not give much of a clue.
Thanks for replies.

Ken,
The lip of the seal should face the inside (away from the brake discs). When you go to install the plate with the seal in it, you must protect the seal from the splines so they don't damage the seal. I find a thin, smooth plastic bottle that just fits over the splines, slide it over the splines, put some lube on it & slide on the seal & plate. If you need to adjust the ring & pinion or end play in the bearings it is best to do that before installing the seal in the plate.
If you have trouble finding a plastic bottle that fits correctly, you can heat one with a hair dryer or heat gun & stretch it some. Make sure it doesn't fit too snug or you may have trouble getting it back off the splines after it cools.

John
