I have a 52 Z when driven, it has what sounds to be a loose bearging (vibrates)between the brake drums. Before I start tearing into it, I was hoping someone could relate or share info on what to do, and how to go about it. It seems to make more noise when I turn. Anyone have heard this before? Thanks much for posting.

Could be a gear noise as well? I found that I had a tooth missing on a bevel gear that connected with the belt pulley. Took the belt pulley off and the noise was gone. Still have a noise back around the axles or brake drums, but only when moving. The right brake seems to all of a sudden lock and grab when the pedal is stepped down, which i'm not happy about. I feel that this is gear related since I can hear the very faint noise when the tractor is moving, and the fact that there is a metal to metal noise and a lock when the right pedal is applied. The pads aren't great, but I don't feel that bad pads would give the sharp lock and metal noise that I get when the brake is applied.

One thing to check with that brake 'lock' noise-Make sure the front spring from the anchor to the front/lower shoe is weaker than the spring to the upper/rear shoe. That way the front shoe touches the drum first. If the rear/upper shoe touches first, it will slam the front/lower shoe into the drum.

as far as noise, IT could be worn pinion shaft bearings (The I/T manual seems to indicate that you can remove the pinion bearing carrier without a lot of disassembly. Having not done this, I don't know.)
Also, it may be a worn bearing on the right hand side of the differential housing. I think it would be the right side, because the thrust from the pinion would be on this side as it wants to push itself out of mesh with the ring gear.

Hey Thanks Kelvin!

Upon inspection of the brake system I did find that the one shoe went first without the other. I'll be darned if I can remember what shoe went first though. I'll have to check that. Probably start with that.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and help. I'll try and get back here if I find what it is. By then this thread will probably be on another page though.

Thanks again!

I have heard brakes make the "lock" sound you describe. We have had that on my dads ZA and my uncle's U, especially if there is any gear oil on them. My cousin's 1850 Oliver makes the same noise.

Do you know what the culprit is Alan? It is a very rigid sound and feel. I've heard stories about the Z's brakes dragging a lot. But that may be a different issue. Something just makes me think it's something to do inside the rear end. But I just don't know.

Kelvin's description seems right on the money. There is an eccentric adjusting bolt on the back of the plate also. This was to correct the drag of the shoe.

Thanks

I'll probably get to checking it after we get all the corn in the bins and the tillage done.

If you put it in neutral & engage the clutch, do you still have the noise? I supposed you could jack it up, maybe even pull the rear wheels & run it to listen. What happens when you apply the brakes individually? Have you pulled the drum covers off & tried it? Grab the bake drums & try to move them around. They may just need the nut tightened or a shim removed behind the bearing housing.

Does this happen just turning at slow speeds or in high gear?

Kind of hard to tell if I can't hear it. Sometimes the brake drums can rattle. Have you tried listening to it with a stethoscope or a screwdriver with the blade end on the tractor and the handle to your ear? If you do this BE CAREFUL driving and listening. Does it make noise with the pto engaged, standing still?
