I have a MM 4 Star with a gas engine. It had been running terrific with zero oil use. Yesterday it stopped as if it run out of gas. I added fuel and started it up. It had a immediate miss,like a spark wire was off. That lasted for about 30 seconds and then the engine started making a low level knocking sound. Any ideas what is going wrong?

Is there any chance the points gap closed up? That would alter the timing could cause a miss and make it very hard to start.

I've seen a point set with Nylon rub block close up in just a few minutes run time.

I"ve found that sometimes the simplest solutions are the most common. I don"t want this to sound bad. I always look for the simplest solution before digging to big and bad things.
The fuel you used was gas and not diesel or fuel and oil mixture correct? I found out the hard way when someone else used my gas can.

Pop the valve cover off and see if you haven't got a broken valve spring. At that time, also just see that everything is turning properly.
We'll go from there.

I removed the value cover and all seems to function smoothly.There is NO sound of anything being broken or bent. When I turn over the engine there is a very strong fuel odor but no visible leaks.

Worse case I would think of oil pump and distributor trouble but it could be a simple ignition problem and the misfiring exaggerating a little bottom end slop. See if you can assure yourself of proper timing, and good ignition breaker points and a good spark. With that done, barring something awful, it ought to run right, then the knock (check oil pressure when you get it running) will either go away or we deal with it next. Check that distributor!!
