Due to the limited information I have in my possession on the history of Minnies I'm having trouble determining when the first ZAU was built. I have found no. 64900001 and according to the serial no. search on this site it looks to be a 1949 model and the first one built. However , another hard cover "picture" book I have seems to indicate they started to build them in 1938. Can anyone please straighten me out??

Thanks in advance.

You have found the first ZAU produced. Probably worth picking up as there are collectors that like to have the first or last of a particular model.

The z "A" u's came in about 1949. The z "T" u's came in about 1938, with a few produced in 1937.

The reference I have shows that 2,937 ZTU were built in 1937 & in 1936 only 37 were built. By the way, my '47 ZTU has a 206 "replacement" engine, according to the serial numbers. Anyone have any info on this?

dlp,
What kind of info are you looking for? The year of your replacement engine or some type of literature that described this swap? I think I've got some price lists from the early 50's that list the 206 as a replacement engine for the ZT tractor.

I know the engine is a '49, according to the numbers. Were they stamped this way if the engine was bought outright or was this just the way the ZA engines were labeled?

dlp,
Your engine was probably destined for a ZA tractor. Unless you know the history of the tractor it's possible the engine was swapped from a ZA into your ZT. I don't think there was a seperate serial # range for replacement engines. Does your engine serial # start with 02249 or 01849?

Actually, according to the serial lists on the MM website, there was a designated prefix for a replacement tractor engine.
018 was the prefix. and it could be either a 206B-4 (Distribuitor ignintion) or a 206E-4 (Magneto ignition)
My '38 ZTU has one of these 206 engines.

Kelvin,
That's why I asked if he had an 018 or 022 serial #. There were over 4000 018 serial # 206B and 206E-4 engines made in 1949 alone. This seems quite high for a replacement engine only.
