M5 Diesel oil pressure high

Just got done with rebuild on my M-5 Diesel. Runs great but oil pressure is too high. Gauge goes to top and stays there. Tried to adjust it down but didn't respond. Thought maybe a bad gauge but some oil has forced it's way out the filter cover in the pan, new gasket and all. I retightned the bolts but when it got cold out it forces more out. Could I have put the pressure valve in wrong or what do I have to do to correct this? I may try another gauge but I really think the pressure is way to high.

I had the identical problem on an Allis WD. The relief valve piston was frozen. Once I got it freed up, oil pressure was regulated and adjustable.

I'd take a close look at that pressure control mechanism. If the spring is O.K. then look closely at the piston. I had one with NO oil pressure and traced the problem to a scored piston that got pushed into the bypass position and wouldn't come back. You may have the same problem but in reverse.
