Can anyone tell me where the coupler assembly should bolt to? Is it supposed to have a bracket, or just bolt on tight against something? The tractor that i'm working on now has a piece of metal welded on underneath the lifting roll that some owner must have done at one time. I would like to put it back to original if I could.

Thanks

First of all what year ZA do you have? The early models (1949-50)before the flote-ride seats had a 22" support iron which was bolted on (underneath)where the large seat bolt is. The models with the later seats had an "L" shaped bracket which was mounted on the bolt where your hoses screw into. It had a 17" support iron bolted underneath the "L" bracket with a 1"x3" bolt. The hoses were 3/8" x 24". The coupler itself was a 3 piece unit, made by the Brunning Company. Allis-Chalmers used the same couplers, as did some Fords. The hoses connected to the tractor had male ends on both of them, as did the hyd cyl. They used a hollow sleeve to connect both of them which was in a clamp bracket, part number 10A1154, one on each sleeve, which connected to the support iron. I make reproduction parts of the support irons for all of them and have used them on my 1952 ZAU. They are from original equipment. I can send you a picture if you like and a parts list of the parts I make.

It's a 1950 ZAU. It has the float ride seat frame but is missing the spring and shock absorber. On top there is just a plain old curved pan seat. Who knows what has been changed on it over time.

If you would like send me some pics and a price list. My email should be open for the contact, unless I should email you. I've got several misc parts that I still need to fully complete it. I've got it running and driveable, but still have a few of the smaller items left that I could use.

Thanks

I forgot to mention they used these support irons on the other models also, UT, GTB,ZB,UB,GB's. Possibly on the R also.

Well, if you want it original, I'm pretty sure the tractor had nothing but hoses between the block on the hydraulic manifold at the back, (usually bolts through one of the bolts on the pto case.) and the hydraulic cylinder on the lifting roll. If you wanted hydraulics on a towed implement, you just removed the cylinder from the lifting roll and put it on the implement, leaving the hoses attached.

Thanks Kelvin!

Wow, never even thought about that. You're right! The hoses thread right into the block and then are routed around and through the holders that are bolted on various spots in the back. I'm used to having tractors with quick couplers (which must not be original either) and never even thought anything of it. Like I said a previous owner had a piece welded onto the lifting roll bracket area and the quick couplers were bolted down onto that. The tractor was used for corn planting, as it had the brackets on at one time. The hoses coming from the block to the quick couplers were bad so when I got the engine going I just plugged the ports on the block. I never saw any hydraulic pics in the Z shop manual, so again would have never thought anything of that. That was a good concept of MM to have the lifting roll in a position so that the cylinder could be mounted up there in position even if hydraulics weren't used.

As long as i'm here, do you know the length of the hoses? I might as well go original, as the only thing that I can imagine using the hydraulics for on this tractor would be a pull type sickle mower (at the most). Otherwise it would just be for looks.

Thanks again Kelvin!

I don't know how long the hoses should be. Most of my experience is on a ZB, where the cylinder and lifting roll are under the platform.
I'm thinking on it they are (1) 7 ft and (1) 7-1/2 ft. Its been a while since we needed new hoses though.
I think on your tractor the hoses come around the back under the seat bar and go up along side the cylinder, in the brackets, then make a 180 turn back to the cylinder. The difference in hose length is the difference between the ports on the cylinder.

OK thanks!

Just ran it on the auger today for corn. I've got some issues to iron out this winter with the transmission gears. I found a tooth missing on one and got that taken care of. Now I wonder if there isn't a tooth off of another gear. I hope to mount up a cylinder to it tomorrow and then find some hoses. You're right on the hoses. Pretty much follow the hose brackets from the block to the cylinder area on the lifting roll.
