wandering blocks

Seen some old posts about blocks that wander.I put my blocks on the crank case dry without the base gasket just to see how much you can chuck them around, there is some but how much is too much? Is there a way to eliminate this if i do have a problem ?The old post seemed to connect this wandering to having higher compression heads. THANX....Steve

Steve,
Unless you're building a super high compression puller engine it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Make sure you're using the updated torques for the head studs and be sure to snug up the intake/exhaust manifold to the heads before tightening anything else down. This will align the manifold to the heads so you don't get any leaks.

I don't recall that post, but I guess it is possible. MM did up the torque specs on the block studs a considerable amount.
If you think about it, when the fuel mixture fires, it tries to drive the piston out of the block and it can't because its connected to the crankshaft by the connecting rod. If Newton's law is right-There is an equal and opposite reaction to every action- then the heads try to raise from the blocks and the blocks from the crankcase with an an equal amount, I guess the blocks could drop back in a slightly different place. But I don't think they would move much.
If everything, head, block and crankcase stayed the same temperature you could ream the holes and install oversize studs I guess. But since the heads and blocks are filled with coolant, the assembly probably won't always stay at the same temperature and you might get cracks from internal stresses within the assembly. And with a little rust it would be a booger to get apart. Since these engines have apparrently given good service, sometimes for 50 years or more, I think it might be good to leave it alone. If you want to do anything, shove the blocks to the left hand side (spark plug side on large MMs), find out what torque you should be using and torque her down. That would give you the best possible rod angle on the power stroke.
