Bore size on my UB Special LP

My IT manual indicates the bore on my UBS should be 4 1/4. My operators manual says 4 1/2. My cylinders actually measure 4 3/8. What gives? The real question is - what do I do about pistons and rings. The existing blocks are worn about .010 so my hole size is 4.385. Existing pistons are 5 ring, 4 above the pin and one below. I'm a bit baffled.
Curt

Wendell Everett or anyone else that has connections to Hastings should be able to get rings for the M&W pistons. Hastings is pretty good about coming up with rings for most anything.

I work right down the road from where these ring are made.

Sounds like you have M&W pistons in yours. It should be a 4-1/4 bore. I don't know how much further you can bore, but I would suggest finding some 4.25 blocks to bore to 4.375 or getting some 4.625 blocks to bore. Either way Welters can get you pistons for either block.

Do you know if piston rings for the M & W's are available? I have two other wore out standard blocks that I could bore to the 4 3/8, use the M & W pistons but I would need new rings. Alternatively, I suppose we could bore the existing blocks, sleeve them back to standard and use a set of 4 1/4's I have, assuming rings are available for that.

I would advise against sleeving your MM blocks. Many folks have had bad experiences doing this. Rings are readily available. I think Welters or most good auto parts places could set you up...try your local machine shop. Using the M&W pistons would yield a much better result if they are still in decent shape. Old U blocks are easy to get. Since you are boring to 4.375, the condition of the original bore should not even matter.

Mo, do you know, of course I can check when I get home, are the blocks on a UB the same as the blocks on a UB Special?

Yes, they are the same, unless they updated the part number during that time. Either way, they will work just fine.

My UTS gas is the same way when I got it 4 3/8" bore with the same piston ring set up. I was told they are M & W pistons and the lower ring is only and extra wiper ring.
