R carburator problem

I am helping a friend with a carb. problem. I have taken it apart and cleaned it several times and the best it will run is when the main needle is turned out about 6 turns and the other is out about a quarter turn, still, it doesn't run right. Book says the rough setting at first is turn each out 2 turns-then the only way it will run is choking it. An ex-mechanic told him a new carb kit won't help, he said something is plugged and try soaking it. Soak in what? Something is plugged, I have tryed blowing air and using WD40 with a tube. Any advice?

The 1st thing to check are the gaskets, get it running, spray carb cleaner around ALL the intake/carb gaskets, if there is ANY rise in RPM, there is a gasket leaking/sucking air/leaning out the mixture. You may have tried this, but it's the place I start with a problem like yours, never assume the carb is the problem, especially after you've put a kit in it. Hope this helps. John

Thanks for all the advice! I finally got it working. I followed your ideas about cleaning it and checking for leaks, it still didn't work. So I took my good carb apart-noticed my separate "tube" between the two halfs was in there differently, so I turned the tube around on the bad carb, and now it runs perfectly! That tube must have been in there backwords. Would that have caused it to run bad?

I'm surprised it ran at all, that "tube" is the venturi and is tapered from one end to the other. When the air flows thru the smallest part it has to speed up and that creates a low pressure zone which is what picks up the fuel from the main nozzle. With it turned end for end the narrow part would have been away from that nozzle end. Also, with it turned around I don't know how you got your two carburator halves to fit together properly. Glad to hear you are up and running.

Soak it good in something like Berrymans or Gunk carb cleaner soak or spray out with some aerosol carb cleaner and try running some soft copper wire thru the passages and jets to clean out and then spray more cleaner thru it and blow out with air. The cleaner will dissolve the varnish and gunk inside from old fuel residue. You may have to carefully remove some jets and more parts to get it cleaned out better too.

Another place to check is the fuel system to the carburetor. The carb really needs a good flow to work well, not a dribble.
make sure you get a good stream at the fuel line where it connects to the carburetor.
