when i got my tractor it had an alternator on it and i am in the prosses of switching back to generator but i am trying my best to rewire it for the delco generator i switched everything back the best i could and took the belt of the generator cuz im missing a bracket and started it with a battery and then tryed to turn of the battery and the tractor died i am curiouse what wires i dont have correct i think it is somewher betwen the generator and the little black box on top cuz you should be able to run a tractor without a battery right

Zin, if its a 3 wire Voltage Regulator and a Delco Class A or equivalent Generator, she wires:

BAT terminal on VR up to the Load (NOT to battery) side of ammeter. ARM (or GEN) terminal on VR to Gens Arm post. FLD on VR to Gens Field post.

If you remove battery power from a coil ignition (i.e. NOT a Magneto Ignition) it should die.

Z,
The tractor will run without a battery only if it has a magneto for ignition. If it has a distributor ignition and a coil then you must leave the battery connected to run.
