can anyone help with information (phone number)on this post in the archives 02/17/02. I need to check out repowering a G1000 and G1355. It is getting very expensive to rebuild my tractors and the time involved ties up the farm shop for extended time. Love the MM's. The first arrived in 1945 and they are the only tractors to power our heavy equipment for the last 50+ years.

Thanks for any help keeping "Yellow power" running.

MM by design are hard to repower! only the A4t's have been repowered with a degree of success, because the engine is not a load bearing / frame item. I would not repower them, but thats my two cents worth. You will have more in it then its worth. Now I think MM are worth a lot, But a newer more modern tractor would be a better place to start for cheap power. Maybe a 2-180 repower would be a better place. Engines in then are poor on torque and can be had cheaper and are easier to reengine. Plus the cabs are not that bad/fairly good. MM are starting to get hard to find in good shape and most of them have had the guts pulled out of them. Just because it will pull it doesn't mean you should do it. That has been the story for a lot of tractors. I am now useing my MM's on not so demanding jobs to extend there lives. To me they are too valuable to use up that way anymore.

Thanks for the input. I contacted the Cummins St Paul location and tried to run down Merlin Stephens. The shop is out of business and Merlin is studing for the ministry.

Cummins said he did not repower the 585. Basic reasons are the same as you stated.

I was looking for alternatives to keep the MM's running at less cost.??

Yes, the 2-180, 2-135 and 2-155 have been repowered and the cab is the same as the 2-150 White which has the MM 585 engine.

Seems that all I do is fix the old girls. Thank goodness for a shop with air conditioning and in floor heat. It makes working in the shop at night nice for me to keep them working.

I have to say I do not know much about Molines, but am willing to learn.. I have repowered a number of Oliver 55 series tractors with Cummins engines. I understand the Moline has a rail front frame, but does the motor really act as part of the frame?? Does the motor sit an angle or is flat with the rear end. The most challenging part of an Oliver is the motor angle.. I would love the task of repowering a 1355 or 955 with an 8.3L Cummins I have sittin' in the shop. Although I certainly understand the issue of leaving them the way they were meant to be... My Oliver 1955 with 5.9L Cummins will plow all day on a tank of fuel, compared to my neighbor's 1355 which uses 5 gallons an hour no matter what it is doing..... Good luck either way you go.. Marc

Oliver and White had the bath tub fitting to set there outsourced engine in. MM did not use that type of design. There engine is bolted straight to the bellhousing and the side rails are then bolted to the structral engine which in turn holds the front end casting on. Not unlike JD. Most cummins installations are not used as a structral member. AS for fuel usage what tractor of that era used less fuel? It sure wasn't JD or Case or international! Why even compare 60's technology to 90's technology. Its just foolishness!
