is a 12 v generator the same size as a 6v i wanna change my 50 zau to 12v but i dont want a altenator

Zin, I cant say for sure about any particular generators used on your tractor, but on a lot of those Delcos the 6 or 12 volt were in the same size of frame. I have used 6 volt Generators to charge 12 volt and never had one go bad simply by changing to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator. A Generator dont know exaclty what voltage its supposed to be, its increased by turning it faster and/or increasing the magnetic field strength by increasing the current passing through its Field windings which is a part of the VR's function.

NOTE: Im an electrical engineer and AM NOT SAYING this is a good or proper engineerign way to do this, Im ONLY SAYING Ive done it and it works (still depends on the current requirements imposed by your tractor and its loads). While it may be necessary to run a bit more field current then the Generator (field windings) was designed to handle, its not so much that they instantly overheat or anything. THE ENGINEERING PROPER WAY TO CONVERT is to make any necessary field coil or armature changes such as Ken at Kenneths Classic Generators down in Texas would make or else just get a new or rebuilt or salvage 12 volt unit.

Most generator/alternator rebuild shops can rebuild your 6V generator and make it either 6V or 12V. I don't know what they do to change it, but I have a friend who just had one done. Call around and ask.

I don't remember if it was Dad's 335 MM or his 1476 Bolens, that he converted from 6 to 12. But I don't think the shop changed any parts in the generator. I think the shop simply roated something by removing 3 screws. I do believe that he changed the light bulbs from 6 to 12. But the 335 MM is still POS ground.

This message is about the 335MM , but not about generators, I need to find parts , such as top overhaul , valves springs guides for a 335 MM , have you needed to do this or do you know where they may be available?.
Any help is appreciated.

JLM, Many of the older 6 volt Delco Generators were 3 brush types, and to set for MAX CHARGE, one could loosen the third brush adjuster plate screws and rotate it so it was as close as possible to the other brush beside it.
