JTU/ZTU tranny differences?

I may have asked some of the historians here before, but what is the difference between the JTU and ZTU tranny? They appear to be the same, but I have not looked up close. The ZTU has a JT number on the casting, but I was told the JTU was shorter slightly. I am building a JTU puller from a pile of junk using a ZTU tranny and ZAS axle housings with a MM engine conversion kit.

The difference in length was in the clutch housing area, so the clutch shaft in the ZT was longer. (The clutches are different too. I bet they use the same linings, though.)

There was a picture of a very early ZTU in the Corresponder a few years back that had a spool shaped casting between the engine and the bellhousing on the JT tranny to make it long enough to use as a ZT transmission.

I guess if you use a ZT transmission, your hood will have to be longer than a stock JT.

While looking @ Jennsen Negs, There are pictures of the first RE engines. These engines are also shorter. The distance between the back of the block and the flange to bolt up different.

Excellent. The JTU hood is nothing complicated, so I can reproduce something easily. My exhaust holes will be different anyway. The transition betweent he two models was sort of interesting in that 1936-37 time.

I could measure the difference in length, but I have the 75th from last JTU made, I THINK it came from the factory with the RE engine because there was prairie gold in all the places that would make you think it was painted as assembled. It has a 4 bolt clutch opening cover, no provision for timming the engine, I installed a 206/ZA, made a timming mark out of an old Chevy piece, I'm sure if I looked, there were lots of differences, I've got a 39 ZTU to compare it to. If there is anything specific you'd like to compare, let me know. John

Yeah, thanks for the tip. Is that you Mr. Grandfield? Your JTU is darn nice if it is the one I remember seeing in Rockford Illinois.
