My PTO is stuck in the off positon. Is there some mechanism for engaging it? Do I have to pull it out and take it apart?
Do you have to split the tractor?
I bought the tractor that way nad the owner now says it has always worked before--hahah
thanks

You don't have to split the tractor.
If you park the tractor on a very steep incline, you can remove the cover through which the PTO shaft protrudes without loosing oil. After removing it, you will be able to see the linkage and the part that slides in and out of gear on the front of the cover. There is a long shaft (approx 2') that goes from the front of the shaft that comes out with the cover to the rear of the transmission. It normally doesn't come out with the cover but if it does, just slip it back over the shaft that drives it. The shaft will be under oil so it might be somewhat difficult to get it aligned.

If you don't have a steep incline, you might want to drain at least some of the oil.

I have a UB and the PTO engagement is a very small or short throw with a short lever. It is not easy to engage as you do not have much leverage. Are you sure you are actually engaging the gears? Hope this helps.

I have UBs too. I made a longer handle so it would engage easier. I have never had trouble with their PTOs. I wonder if something could be rusted tight there?
