My 1939 R CAB AND 1940 RTN have a solid wide platform probably to accomadate the cab. The other 6 of my R's all have the same single center platform with the ones having fenders using the the three piece platform to hold the fenders on. 2 RTE, 1 RTU ,3 RTS all from 1945 to 1950 all the same.

Well that makes it a R with the U option. If its a trike front end then you have a RTU. R is the model. T for trike. U for utility

As far as I know, all R's had a platform up until about 1950, when MM introduced the 'Hitchor' their 3-point hitch for the tractor.

There were at least 2 styles- '39 and 40 used a 1 piece platform while later tractors had a platform that was sectional, with a center and left and right sections. I parted out a '45 that only had one of the side sections. I have a complete, running '48 RTU and a non-running, nearly complete '49 RTU with the 3-piece platform.

'U' in the model indicates 'Universal' meaning it had a 2 wheel narrow front and It could cultivate as well as plow.

I believe they were an option. The earlier models seem to have them more often. Most of the later R's had a platform that had a center setion and a outer piece could be added on the sides to make the platform wider. As far as I know the old square tank tractors had the wider platform. I have an old parts book that shows the battery box mounted on the platform just inside the left rear fender. and that has the large one piece platform.
