I am sick of getting my a$$ Handed to me at these stoneboat pulls. I need help guys. No one else has these molines here and i'm in need of advice.
Here is what I have: 1949 UTS, wide front, 283 cubes, 4 1/4 x 5" stroke, Heads-GE30E, Blocks- 10A149, Crankcase- KE1510, Intake Man-KE822a, exhaust man-KE821g, I have the pto out and the belt pulley out, fenders off, ive gone through the carb. Last year i ran 16.9x30's, this year i bolted on a set of 16.9x38"s and there just isnt enough guts, so then i tried some 16.9x34's, still losing. i pull in the 5500# class but i dont have my heart set on it. I have been competing for second to last place all summer long, when i do this i dont want to build a second place tractor. please help.

Lengthen your drawbar 10 inches if the rules allow it. This will tend to make the front end lighter and put more weight on the rear wheels. I did this on my UTS and it sure does help!

i need to know the best parts numbers for these heads, blocks and everything else, i may give the 15.5's a try, but it seems to me that in order to compete with the big dogs i need to get into the 18.4x38 range, and i need to be able to turn them. So should i breath some fire into that engine? Or put a slower first gear in?

Some of the UTS do not balance as well as a UTU. I would put 13.6x38 or 15.5 on it and maybe replace the wide front end with a UTU narrow front. The 283 will be a little weak especially with the heads you are running. Just to tweak things up slightly and without much money, I'd suggest any of the following:

1. Use M5 blocks and pistons making 336-350 cubes
2. Or bore to 4.375 making 300 cubes
3. Replace heads with higher compression ones
4. Replace your stock manifolds with later style propane manifolds.
5. Look at a pulling cam and larger venturi from an M670 carb.
6. Make sure your governor is working properly
7. Tune the engine on a dyno.

All of these are simple steps that ususally yield a few more ponies on fairly stock MM tractors.

as far as strickly stock antique the molines do ok. Here is the exception if you have to pull agaist later tractors like oliver 770 with torq amp forget it. thats what the local club did. what i am saying is a 1939 farmall or moline is not going to compete against a 1960 oliver 770. i would like to see a pre 1950 etc pull. as far as big hp engines can,t help you there.

Molines are hard to get to pull well because they have heavy front ends and you windup pushing a lot of your weight. Is your draw bar up as high as allowed and as close to the center of the axle as allowed. Usually to do this you need to make a lot of modifications. The 5500 lb. class will not allow many suit case weight but they all need the be behind the rear axle. The length of the chain makes a big difference where you need the little weight you can add. Your bare tractor must be close to 5500. Jerry

jerry i didn't think of the heavy frount weight problem! I was thinking more in machines with a torque amp like the oliver 770 as a competitor. i have 2 freinds that pull r/z/u and they do win (stock tractors) now a 670 is a different matter it has won a few state pulls!

Its difficult to win with a bone stock tractor. The guys with the other tractors will all say their tractors are stock but THEY ALL LIE::: thats the way it is. I pull with a U that has the overbore kit in it 1/8 dia. and aluimin pistons and I win some of the time. I also pull with a G and depending on the track the U will pull farther some of the time. Tires, track,drawbar, RPM.
